Energy Tips

Did you know heating and cooling can account for more than 40 percent of your home energy costs? At Complete Air Systems, Inc. we care about helping our customers maintain their heating and air conditioning systems and their monthly energy costs.

Here are some Valuable Energy Saving Tips:

Set your thermostat at 78°F or higher. Each degree setting below 78°F will increase your energy consumption by approximately 8%.

Use bath and kitchen fans sparingly when the air conditioner is operating.

Inspect and clean both the indoor and outdoor coils. The indoor coil in your air conditioner acts as a magnet for dust because it is constantly wet during the cooling season. Dirt build-up on the indoor coil is the single most common cause of poor efficiency. The outdoor coil must also be checked periodically for dirt build-up and cleaned if necessary.

Have a licensed service contractor check the refrigerant charge. The circulating fluid in your air conditioner is a special refrigerant gas put in when the system is installed. If the system is overcharged or undercharged with refrigerant, it will not work properly.

Reduce the cooling load by using cost-effective conservation measures. For example, effectively shade east and west windows. When possible, delay heat-generating activities, such as dishwashing, until the evening on hot days.

Over most of the cooling season, keep the house closed tight during the day. Don't let in unwanted heat and humidity. If practical, ventilate at night either naturally or with fans.

Try not to use a dehumidifier at the same time your air conditioner is operating. The dehumidifier will increase the cooling load and force the air conditioner to work harder.

How often should you change the filter on your heating and AC unit?

You should at least look at your filter every 30 days and change same if necessary. If clean, check at least every 45 days.

What is the most important thing to consider when buying a new air conditioner?

When it's time for a new replacement, choosing one of the correct size (heating and/or cooling output) is critical to getting the best efficiency, comfort, and lowest maintenance and operating costs over the life of the new system. The most common sizing mistake is getting an oversized heating or cooling system. This makes the new system operate inefficiently, break down more often, and cost more to operate. Call Complete Air Systems, Inc. to determine what is the best size unit for your home.

Is using ceiling fans and the air conditioner at the same time cost efficient or a waste of energy?

Ceiling fans are definitely not a waste of energy. Ceiling fans use very little electricity. Use them to circulate air in the house, to make the house feel cooler. You can even turn the thermostat up and keep the same effect.
